How to Repair an Automotive Headliner

The headliner in your vehicle doesn't get much attention, until it becomes torn or starts to sag into your line of sight. Once the headliner is torn or hanging down, it's hard to ignore and can cause problems while you are driving. Using simple items found in a fabric store, you can learn how to repair an automotive headliner.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray adhesive
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Take the falling headliner, and pull it to the nearest edge of the ceiling, where it came out of. Make sure there is enough material to fit back to the edge and cover the ceiling. Headliner material is elastic, so it can be stretched, but it is also extremely thin and fragile, so be careful when pulling it.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws of the trim piece that should be holding the headliner. The Phillips screws should be plainly visible along the edges of the trim.

  • Spray a thin coat of adhesive onto the exposed ceiling and the back side of the headliner. Allow them to dry for one minute. Press the headliner against the ceiling, pushing any wrinkles towards to edge to get them out.

  • Tuck the edge of the headliner behind the loosened trim piece. Tighten the Phillips screws on the trim piece, so it will hold the headliner. Use a flat screwdriver to tuck the headliner behind the trim.
