How to Replace the Rear Brake Dust Shields on a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500

The rear brake dust shield on the 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 bolts behind the wheel to the rear axle housing. As you press on your brakes, the material used to manufacture the brake pads turns to dust. This brake dust would accumulate on the underside of your Silverado if the brake shields were not there. The shields are made of steel, and due to their location, they are subject to road dirt, water and salt. Over time, you can expect the rear brake shields to rust and eventually develop holes.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire iron
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the rear tires of the Silverado, using the tire iron supplied with the truck.

  • Jack the Silverado off the ground and place jack stands under the rear axle. Lower the truck onto the jack stands.

  • Remove the lug nuts from the truck and pull off the rear wheels.

  • Locate the two bolts that secure the dust shield to the axle housing. The nuts bolt into the housing from the backside of the dust shields.

  • Remove the nuts that secure the shields to the axle housing, using a socket and ratchet.

  • Place the new dust shields on the axle housing, thread the bolts into the housing, using your fingers to prevent cross threading, and tighten the bolts, using the socket and ratchet.

  • Place the wheel back onto the Silverado, thread the lug nuts onto the wheel studs with your fingers and turn the nuts a quarter turn with the tire iron.

  • Remove the truck from the jack stands and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
