How to Repair a Driver's Side Mirror

Most late model vehicles attach the driver's side mirror to the side of the car in a similar manner. Three bolts extend from the mirror housing, through the door and secure using three nuts. To remove the mirror and replace it you must take the inner door apart and the new mirror may be expensive. Repairing the mirror offers a more cost effective, less work intensive alternative to replacement.

  • Push the right side of the mirror lens into the mirror housing. The lens pivots on the mirror's motor located inside the housing, so pushing on the right side of the mirror forces the left side of the mirror out of the housing.

  • Grasp the mirror lens with your hand and then pull outward. The mirror lens attaches to the mirror's motor via retaining clips. As you pull on the mirror lens, the retaining clips let go of the motor.

  • Place the new mirror in the housing. The tight tolerance of the mirror housing centers the mirror over the motor and lines up the retaining clips.

  • Press the mirror onto the motor with your hand until you feel it snap into place.
