When installing a 22R alternator, it is good idea always to check the clearance between the main positive wire terminal and the block or cylinder head. The alternator post will always have clearance, but the wire connector can bend or installed where it could make unfortunate contact. This could easily cause a fire. Make sure to relate the year, make, and model and engine size to the parts supplier to ensure you get the correct alternator. This has always been a problem in the industry -- getting the correct alternator the first time.
Remove the negative battery terminal using a wrench. Loosen the top and bottom bolts on the alternator with a socket, but do not remove them. Slide the alternator in toward the center of the engine to relieve the tension on the accessory belt. Lift the belt off the alternator pulley.
Pull the plastic electrical field wire plug out of the outside rear of the alternator. Remove the large, battery positive wire from the back of the alternator using a wrench. Remove the two bolts securing the alternator to the engine. Lift the alternator out of the engine compartment.
Install the new alternator by aligning the two holes in the alternator with the corresponding holes in the block. Install the two alternator bolts loosely by hand. Install the battery positive cable to the post on the back of the alternator and tighten with a wrench.
Plug the plastic field wire into the outside rear of the alternator. Place the accessory drive belt on the alternator pulley. Pull the alternator toward the fender to apply tension to the belt. Tighten the lock nut with a wrench. Tighten the lower alternator bolt securely with a socket. Replace the negative battery terminal and tighten with a wrench.
