How to Remove the Headlight Spring Clip From a Hyundai Elantra

Any Hyundai Elantra owner who has tried to change a headlight as a do-it-yourself project has had to endure the headlight spring clip. This small spring clip retains the halogen headlight bulb in the back of the headlight assembly. The spring clip is affixed by two Phillips head screws. However, removing or loosening the screws is not necessary to remove the headlight. If replacing the clip is required, the two screws on each end can be loosened or removed to remove the clip.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mm wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the hood of the Hyundai Elantra with the engine off, the parking brake applied and the headlight switch in the "Off" position.

  • Remove the two top retaining bolts and the inboard bolt of the headlight assembly with the 10 mm wrench.

  • Pull/wiggle the headlight assembly away from the front of the Elantra.

  • Disconnect the electrical wire connection from the rear of the headlight assembly by squeezing in the retaining locks of the plug and pulling it away from the outlet.

  • Remove the black headlight cover by unscrewing it in a counterclockwise motion.

  • Press the extended end of the clip inward and slightly upward if replacing the headlight. The clip will pivot on the outboard Phillips screw and unhinge, allowing the headlight removal. If removing and replacing the clip, loosen each Phillips screw on both sides of the clip and extract it from the back of the headlight assembly.
