How to Remove Touch Up Paint

The presence of unsightly touch up paint blobs or touch up paint colors that do not match the paint color on the rest of your vehicle can be reasons why you may want to remove touch up paint. Chemical paint removers offer a way to remove car paint without having to mechanically scrub off the paint applied to thin metal panels found on most modern cars. A lacquer thinner is a petroleum-based solvent you can use to chemically remove touch up paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Car lacquer thinner
  • Lint-free cloth/ terry cloth towel
  • Washing sponge
  • Car polish
  • Polishing cloth
  • Thin the touch up paint with car lacquer thinner. Apply a small amount of lacquer thinner to a lint-free cloth and gently rub it onto the affected area. Car lacquer thinners can be bought at most auto stores.

  • Add more lacquer thinner gradually until the touch up paint starts to flow freely. Too much lacquer thinner can cause the touch up paint to run and drip to the unaffected areas or soften the surrounding paint on the vehicle.

  • Wipe the dissipated touch up paint with a clean lint-free cloth.

  • Remove any remaining lacquer thinner. Wipe the affected area with a damp cloth. Dip a sponge in soapy water and wash the affected area. Dry the area with a clean terry cloth towel.

  • Apply car polish on the cleaned surface using a polishing cloth. Buff out with a clean terry cloth towel. Use a short back-and-forth motion to apply the polish.
