How to Replace the Light Behind a Silverado Speedometer

The speedometer gauge is a part of your Chevy Silverado's instrument cluster, which is illuminated by multiple bulbs. If the bulb for the speedometer burns out, you need to replace it. A number of things can vary in this procedure, including the type of bulb you need. Consult with someone at the auto parts store to make sure you get the parts you need for your truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim stick
  • Screwdriver
  • Instrument cluster light

Removal

  • Pry off the trim panel above the instrument cluster. In many cases, this involves prying it off its clips with a trim stick.

  • Lower the steering column if your Silverado is equipped with a tilt-lever column.

  • Unscrew the retaining screws for the instrument cluster with a screwdriver. There are usually two at the top and two on the bottom. Pull the cluster out. Disconnect the electrical connectors in the back.

  • Twist and remove the bulb holder directly behind the speedometer from the instrument cluster and pull the bulb out of the holder.

Installation

  • Press the replacement bulb into the holder. Do not touch the bulb glass with your fingers. Instead, use gloves or a rag.

  • Insert the bulb holder into the rear of the instrument cluster and turn it clockwise to lock it in place.

  • Reconnect the electrical connectors to the instrument cluster and install it back within the instrument panel, applying its screws.

  • Reconnect the trim panel for the instrument cluster using its clips and raise the steering column if needed.
