How to Access the Trouble Codes on a 1994 BMW

BMW includes a service indicator computer with an internal diagnostic function on its cars to alert drivers when there is a problem. The service indicator computer also provides codes to indicate what that problem is. In BMWs made from 1989 through 1995, including 1994 models, the code can be read by activating the service indicator computer and reading the flashes of the engine warning light. You can do this without any special equipment.

  • Insert the key and turn it to the "On" position without starting your 1994 BMW.

  • Press the accelerator all the way to the floor, then release it, making sure it returns to its highest position before continuing.

  • Repeat the last step four more times with one press per second. The timing must be right to activate the error code flashes. The "check engine" light will flash once, then start flashing again to indicate a code after the fifth pedal depression. If this does not happen, repeat Steps 2 and 3 a little faster or slower to get the timing correct.

  • Record the number of times the "check engine" light flashes. After it flashes the first time, it will pause for two seconds and flash a number of times to indicate the first digit of the code. The flashing will pause for two seconds, then start with a second series of flashes to indicate the second digit. This will continue until all four digits have been indicated. This process will repeat if there is more than one error code to display.

  • Compare the four-digit code to the list of error codes for the BMW. This will indicate the problem found by the service indicator computer.
