How to Replace a Tail Light in an Acura Integra

First released in 1986, the Acura Integra was Honda's initial luxury model. It was replaced with the RSX model in 2001. The Integra offered two body styles: the classic hatchback and the more commercial sedan. Apart from the exterior style of these cars, the standard mechanics remained pretty much the same. The process of replacing a tail light varies slightly from one style to the other. Just note that on the Acura model Type-R, you can not repair the tail lights yourself. Things You'll Need

  • Replacement halogen bulbs
  • Flat-tipped screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Torque wrench

Hatchback

  • Open the hatch. Using a small flat-tipped screwdriver, remove the tether hardware cover. Remove the anchor plate with a wrench, turning the bolt counterclockwise.

  • Push the center of each cover fastener's head until it pops in. This will let you remove the tail light cover panel.

  • Turn the light socket one-quarter turn counterclockwise to remove it.

  • Verify which bulb needs to be replaced by testing the tail lights. The bulb can be removed by turning it counterclockwise.

  • Insert the new bulb. Test the tail lights again to ensure they have been properly installed.

  • Replace the socket in the light assembly. Reinstall the tether hardware, making sure the toothed washer is underneath the bolt. If possible, use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 16 foot-pounds.

  • Reset each fastener by pushing on the pointed end of each until it pops. The pointed end should be almost flush with the fingers on the housing.

  • Reinstall the hardware cover and secure each fastener by pushing the center down until it locks.

Sedan

  • Open the trunk and remove the six fasteners from the trunk wall cover. Remove another fastener from the wall lining and pull the lining back.

  • Remove the socket with a one-quarter turn counterclockwise.

  • Push the old bulb in and counterclockwise to remove. Install the new bulb in the reverse order of removal.

  • Replace the socket in the light assembly, turning clockwise until it locks. Test the light to ensure proper installation.

  • Reinstall the wall lining and the trunk wall cover with fasteners.
