How to Change a Fuse on a 1996 Jeep Cherokee

If something stops working in your car, the first thing you should do is check the fuses. You may just have to change a fuse that costs less than a dollar instead of getting a new radio or new headlights. Automobile fuses are color-coded so that it is easy to tell the amperage of the fuse. There is a diagram in the fuse box of the 1996 Jeep Cherokee that shows where each fuse goes.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement fuse
  • Open the driver's door. Locate the fuse box under the dashboard above the brake pedal. Take the cover off.

  • Look on the inside of the cover to find the fuse diagram. The fuse diagram shows you where each fuse is located in the fuse box, the amperage of each fuse and what it controls.

  • Pull the fuse that you want to check out of the fuse box. If the fuse is positioned tightly between other fuses, use the fuse picker that's inside the fuse box to lift it out.

  • Replace the burned-out fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage. Put the cover back on the fuse box.
