How to Reset the Malfunction Indicator in a 2008 Chrysler

If your on-board computer has identified a fault in one of the electronic circuits it monitors, it turns a warning light in the instrument cluster on. It also stores an alpha-numeric code in it's memory that relates to the fault. Resetting the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) after you have made repairs on your 2008 Chrysler requires an OBD-II compliant scan tool or code reader. These tools are reasonably priced and available at most large auto-parts chains.

Things You'll Need

  • Scan tool/code reader
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Turn the ignition key off. Attach cable from the scan tool or code reader to the Chrysler's diagnostic connector, located under the driver-side of the dash between the steering column and the center console. Turn the ignition key on to turn on the scan tool or code reader. This type of on-board diagnostic system provides the power for the scan tool.

  • Enter into generic OBD-II diagnostics by selecting "Generic OBD" or "Global OBD" (depending on the manufacturer of the scan tool) from the Main Menu. If you are using a code reader, push the "Read Codes" button on the front of the reader. Jot down the codes and their descriptions with a pen and paper when they are displayed on the tool's display. This will save confusion later if the MIL light comes back on.

  • Press the back button on the scan tool, then select "Erase Codes" or "Clear Codes", depending on the tool's manufacturer. If using a code reader, press the "Erase Codes" button on the front of the tool. A warning message will be displayed. Select "Yes" if you are sure you want to erase the codes and reset the MIL. Test drive the Chrysler to verify that the light stays off when driven.
