How to Pop a Locked Car Trunk

Car owners may find themselves in a predicament when they accidentally lock their trunk key inside the truck. Vehicles with a separate key for the ignition lock and trunk lock may not have an extra trunk key to access items in the trunk. Gaining access to the trunk to unlock it from the inside includes entry from the back seat of the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Flashlight
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Open the car door and push the front seats forward as far as they will go. Lean the backs of the front seats forward.

  • Slide the back seat to the rear of the car and lift up on the seat bottom. Some models of vehicles have rear seats that will unhook and lift up to remove them from the car.

  • Grasp the large bolt on the left side of the seat with an adjustable wrench on a bolt-in frame. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to loosen it. Pull the bolt straight out. Repeat this process to remove the seat bolt on the right side of the seat.

  • Lift the seat bottom up, fold the seat back down and pull the seat out of the vehicle. There are forward facing hooks on each side of the seat that attach to a metal rod. Press the seat back and slide it forward to unhook it. This action allows access to the trunk from the back seat. Remove any insulation between the back seat and trunk by pulling it down from the top.

  • Crawl into the trunk from the backseat with a flashlight and screwdriver. Turn the flashlight on to find the horizontal metal bar next to the trunk lock. Place a flat-head screwdriver in the square box on the horizontal rod. Turn the screwdriver clockwise to activate the lock. Modern vehicles have an emergency pull cord in the trunk to release the lock instead of using a screwdriver in the locking mechanism.

  • Replace the insulation and back seat of the vehicle.
