How to Replace a Distributor on the 1992 Honda Accord

Since 1990, the Honda Accord's distributor has been fully electronic. The 1992 Accord distributor is driven by a camshaft. It is responsible for sending a spark to each appropriate spark plug at the right time. The engine control unit, a little computer, controls all of the timing for the distributor instead of utilizing a mechanical or vacuum advance. When the distributor fails to function properly, the car may not start at all or it may not restart after the engine has been warmed up. It's good to know that there is an internal O-ring the prevents oil from leaking into the distributor cap. If this O-ring fails, you'll have to replace the distributor.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Ratchet
  • Extension
  • Socket
  • Engine oil
  • Replacement distributor

Distributor Removal

  • Remove the three screws that secure the distributor cap to the distributor. Lay the cap out of the way with the spark plug wires still attached.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the 12mm bolts that secure the distributor to the head. Slide the distributor out.

  • Remove the screw that is in the rotor and slide the rotor off the shaft.

Distributor Installation

  • Install the rotor onto the new distributor and tighten the screw. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the large O-ring on the distributor.

  • Line up the distributor drive lugs with the notch in the end of the camshaft. Slide the distributor into the head until it is fully seated.

  • Install and tighten the distributor bolts. Place the distributor cap on the distributor and tighten the screws. Reconnect the electrical connector.
