How to Repair a Cracked Auto Rim

The rim of a car is there to protect the metal frame if the car is ever in an accident. Usually made of plastic, the rim is strong enough to withstand intense force, but it can occasionally crack from an intense blow. If this happens, you can simply patch the damaged area with a bumper patch.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap
  • Water
  • Soft sponge
  • Soft cloths
  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • Adhesion promoter
  • Applicator brush
  • Measuring tape
  • Bumper patch
  • Scissors
  • Hair dryer or heat gun
  • Clean the damaged area with soap and water. Use a soft sponge and then dry it off with a soft cloth.

  • Create a rough surface on top of and surrounding the damage. Use 180-grit sandpaper to scratch the surface just enough to peel off the paint covering the plastic.

  • Paint a thin layer of adhesion promoter onto the surrounding area. Wait 15 minutes for it to dry.

  • Lay the patch over the damage and cut it down to size. It needs to be larger than the damaged area by 1 inch all the way around.

  • Use the hair dryer or heat gun to heat the back of the patch. This will aid in the bonding process between the metal and the patch.

  • Pull the paper backing off of the patch. Place it sticky side down, and press down firmly. Quickly mold it into shape so that it completely covers the damage. Allow several hours of drying time before allowing the area to get wet for any reason.
