How to Replace a Tail Light on a 2006 Dodge Pickup

The 2006 Dodge truck series uses a sealed-beam taillight assembly. If a taillight bulb burns out, you need to replace the whole taillight assembly. You can purchase a replacement taillight assembly from an auto parts specialist or Dodge dealer. Replace the lights at home in minutes to save substantial expense compared to a service center's hourly rate. Change them in pairs to extend the bulb life and ensure consistency in color.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement taillight assembly
  • Lower the tailgate of the truck. Remove the screw from the inside edge of the taillight assembly with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the screw in the top outer corner of the assembly with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the light assembly away from the bed of the truck until you can reach the wiring harness. Squeeze the retaining tab while you disconnect the wiring harness. Set the old light aside.

  • Connect the wiring harness on the new taillight by pushing the connectors together. Position the taillight in the mounting space and secure it with the two screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Repeat the process on the second taillight assembly. Close the tailgate.
