How to Replace My Saab's Alternator

The alternator for the Saab is available in the 90-amp version or the 130-amp version. The 130-amp version is used for the Saab with option that draw more juice, such as air conditioning, power seats, power windows and, if equipped, seat heaters. When you replace the alternator, you need to save the pulley, fan, shaftkey (or fan spacer) and mounting hardware from the old alternator. You'll reuse them with the new alternator.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of sockets
  • Set of wrenches
  • Tool 83-95-254
  • Torque wrench
  • Remove the battery ground cable and set it aside. Unbolt and remove the intake manifold shield using the appropriate socket. Unplug and remove the crankcase ventilation solenoid and the constant pressure valves using the appropriate socket.

  • Loosen the accessory drive belt tensioner by pushing it away from the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys. Remove the belt tensioner using tool 83-95-254, which is available at any Saab dealership. Remove the alternator upper mounting bolt, the right engine mount nut and the rear engine mount nut using the appropriate sockets or wrenches.

  • Unbolt and remove the front exhaust pipe. Loosen the clamps on the hose between the oil trap and the oil sump using the appropriate socket. Pull the hose off. Unplug the alternator’s electrical connectors. Remove the alternator lower bolt, using the appropriate socket. Remove the alternator from the engine.

  • Hold the alternator up to the bracket and insert the lower retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt loosely using a socket. Plug the alternator’s electrical connectors in. Reinstall the hose between the oil trap and oil sump. Bolt up the front exhaust pipe. Screw in the upper retaining bolt. Tighten it to 33 foot-pounds of torque. Snugly tighten the upper alternator bolt.

  • Install the belt tensioner using a socket. Route the belt around the pulleys pursuant to the belt routing diagram on the radiator shroud or the underside of the hood. Push the tensioner pulley toward the engine, then slide the belt over the tensioner pulley. Reinstall the crankcase ventilation solenoid and constant pressure valves, and plug them in.

  • Reinstall the engine mounts. Tighten the right engine mount bolt to 37 foot-pounds of torque. Tighten the rear engine mount bolt to 19 foot-pounds of torque. Reinstall the intake manifold shield and the battery ground cable using the appropriate sockets.
