How to Repair a Bumper Scrape

One of the most common signs of wear to a car and one of the most conspicuous is the scratched or scuffed bumper. An ugly scratch or scuff mark on your bumper can ruin the look of your car. Fortunately it can be repaired at home. There is no need to take your car into a shop for a costly touch up by a professional.

Things You'll Need

  • Car soap
  • 2 cloths
  • Towel
  • Sandpaper
  • Masking tape
  • Thick paper
  • Primer in a spray can
  • Car spray paint
  • Rubbing compound
  • Clear coat in a spray can
  • Wash the scratched area with car soap and water using a cloth. Dry the area thoroughly with a towel.

  • Rub the damaged area with sandpaper lightly. Don't rub too long or hard in one area. You want to create a smooth surface all around the scratched or scuffed area. Once the area is completely smooth, wash it again with soap and water and dry it with a towel.

  • Apply masking tape around the sanded area, making a border around the area you will spray with primer and paint. Tape sheets of thick paper around that border to protect the larger area of the car from unwanted sprayed primer and paint.

  • Spray a light coat of primer over the sanded area. Spray slowly in a back and forth motion. Let the coat dry. Inspect it for any uneven areas, sand these lightly until smooth. Wipe the area clean with a cloth and spray on another coat of primer. Repeat these steps until the area is very smooth (2-3 coats). Let sit until dry.

  • Spray on a light coat of paint following the same procedure as you did with the primer. After the area is dry, inspect for uneven areas, sand, wipe with cloth and spray on another coat. Let sit until dry.

  • Remove the masking tape and paper. You will notice a small border line or ridge where the newly applied touch up is uneven with the surrounding paint. Rub this line down gently with a rubbing compound. Wipe clean and let dry. Spray the area over lightly with clear coat and let dry.
