How to Replace a Ford Oil Pressure Switch

The oil pressure switch in Ford vehicles is part of the computerized engine-management system. The powertrain control module (PCM) receives a continuous stream of data from the oil pressure switch in order to monitor changes to the engine oil pressure in real time. When the oil pressure switch fails it is unable to supply the PCM with that data. Replacement oil pressure switches are available at most auto parts stores and automotive dealerships.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery terminal wrench
  • Metric box-end wrench set
  • Thread sealant
  • Replacement oil switch
  • Turn the engine off and apply the parking brake. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal with the battery terminal wrench.

  • Find the oil pressure switch inside the engine. It is on the rear side of the engine block, near the intake manifold.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the oil pressure switch. Remove the switch using the box-end wrench.

  • Apply thread sealant to the threads on the oil pressure switch. Install the switch using the box-end wrench.

  • Reconnect the oil pressure sensor’s electrical connector. Reconnect the negative battery terminal using the battery terminal wrench.

  • Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
