How to Change Belts on a 2002 Kia

In 2002 Kia released a new and improved lineup of cars including the Spectra and the Rio. All of Kia's vehicles use a drive belt to run a variety of pumps and gears in the engine such as the alternator and the water pump. These vehicles use the same basic instructions for replacing the drive belt. Replacing a Kia drive belt will take around an hour. At -ome mechanics need not fear replacing the drive belt, because it is simple matter of pulling the old one off (if it's still on) and putting a new one on.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Tension bar
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal, using the socket wrench.

  • Loosen the adjuster bolt on the tension pulley with the socket wrench. The tension pulley is in the front-center of the engine compartment and is directly behind the fan.

  • Draw a diagram of the exact path the drive belt takes around the pulleys if there is no such diagram already posted in the engine compartment.

  • Remove the drive belt. Once the adjuster bolt is loose, the tension pulley should slide enough to allow the belt to slip off the tension pulley. Then slip the belt off the rest of the pulleys

  • Place the new drive belt in its place. Make sure that it follows the correct path and that the belt and all of the grooves in the pulleys line up for a smooth fit.

  • Place the tension bar on the tension pulley and the socket wrench on the adjuster bolt. Use the tension bar as a lever to tighten the belt. Once the belt is tight, tighten the adjuster bolt to secure the tension pulley in place.

  • Reattach the negative battery cable.
