How to Fix the Gas Gauge in a 1992 Ford Ranger

1992 Ford Rangers have integrated instrument clusters housing the speedometer, odometer and other gauges, including the gas gauge. While a non-functioning gas gauge isn't always symptomatic of a malfunction in the gauge itself, if troubleshooting leads to a faulty gauge, you must replace the entire instrument cluster. Since instrument clusters contain the odometer, which is governed by Federal anti-fraud regulations, be prepared to jump through a hoop or two more than normal when purchasing your replacement cluster.

Things You'll Need

  • Philips head screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Replacement instrument cluster
  • Use a Philips head screwdriver to remove the fasteners holding the trim panel in place surrounding the instrument cluster. Pull the trim panel out by hand and set it aside. If your Ranger is equipped with a tilt wheel, tilt it down as far as it will go to provide better access to the instrument cluster and trim.

  • Use the socket set to remove the four bolts holding the instrument cluster in place. Pull the instrument cluster outward by hand until you can reach behind and disconnect the wiring harness leading to the rear of the cluster.

  • Pull the instrument cluster out and compare it to your replacement cluster to make sure everything is identical.

  • Set the new instrument cluster over the top of the steering column and plug the wiring harness into the rear of the cluster. Make sure the harness seats properly into the cluster before proceeding further.

  • Push the cluster into position and reinstall the bolts that hold it in place. Put the trim panel back in place and reinstall the screws that hold it to the dashboard.
