How to Change an AC Compressor for a Honda Civic

Honda automobiles, including the Civic, use a compressor to circulate coolant through a series of lines, the evaporator, and condenser. This compressor can become damaged or leak, and can be taken out by removing it's connections to the Civic, including the freon lines and wiring harness terminals. The average backyard mechanic can replace a compressor in a Civic in about two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Line wrench
  • Completely evacuate the coolant from the air conditioning system by taking the Civic to a garage or oil change shop. They will typically remove this coolant for free as they are compensated for collecting it.

  • Disconnect the battery's positive terminal by turning the terminal bolt counterclockwise. Lay the terminal aside.

  • Press firmly on the tension pulley arm and slide the primary drive belt out from under the idle pulley wheel. Release the tension arm and the belt will slacken enough to be removed from the A/C compressor pulley.

  • Remove the coolant lines from the compressor by turning the line bolts counterclockwise. Check for worn or damaged gaskets inside the line nut. Disconnect the wiring harness adapter plug by pulling it from the compressor.

  • Remove the compressor by turning all mount bolts counterclockwise and manipulating the unit from the engine compartment. Replace the unit by following the steps in reverse. Fill the system with coolant using a home kit, or return to the garage to reclaim the old coolant.
