How to Make Automatic Transmissions Faster

According to Daniel Decerman, transmission specialist with a well-known transmission repair company in San Diego, California, automatic transmissions allow your car to shift automatically. If you want to make your automatic transmission go faster, you need to change the points from which the transmission shifts, commonly referred to as “shift points." There are do-it-yourself transmission modification kits readily available at reasonable prices to aid in your transmission adjustment project. Online vendors such as Summit Racing Equipment and Jegs can provide you with transmission upgrade kits.

Things You'll Need

  • Allen keys
  • Wrench and socket set
  • Drain pan
  • Transmission modification kit
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Silicone grease
  • 2 clean shop rags
  • Transmission fluid
  • Drain the transmission fluid out of your transmission oil pan into a drain pan.

  • Take your transmission oil pan off with a wrench and sockets or Allen keys. Your use of tool will depend on the make and model of your car and the fasteners used to hold the pan on. Transmission pans are normally held on by multiple fasteners around the flange of the pan, where it meets the transmission.

  • Purchase a transmission modification set. Your kit will come with all the components you will use to replace existing parts of your transmission.

  • Look at the components within the transmission modification kit and remove the like components from your transmission with your wrench and socket set and screwdrivers. Your transmission modification kit should include instructions and outline each part to replace. Generally, you will need to remove your transmission valve body assembly with pins and springs, all transmission gaskets and the transmission oil filter, as these components are replaced in transmission modification kits. You can do this by using your wrench and socket set along with your screwdrivers. The tools you will use are again dependent on the make and model of your vehicle as well as your transmission type.

  • Install the new valve body assembly with any new springs and pins that come in your kit, as well as all new gaskets, by using your wrench and socket set and screwdrivers. Coat your new gaskets with silicone grease before installation. Take extra care to avoid scarring or tearing the new gaskets. With the new valve body and gaskets installed, torque to the specs your transmission modification kit specifies.

  • Install the new oil filter.

  • Remove any dirt or debris on the transmission with a rag.

  • Wipe out your transmission oil pan with a clean rag to remove any old oil and/or sludge buildup in the pan, and reinstall the oil pan. Torque the fasteners on the oil pan in accordance with the instructions provided by the transmission modification kit. Failure to do so will result in leaks and possibly destroy the oil pan. Once your pan is on, service your transmission by adding transmission fluid, then test your newly modified automobile.
