The odometer in your Ford Focus is integrated into your vehicle’s instrument cluster and cannot be serviced by the do-it-yourselfer separately from the cluster. Luckily for you, it is much easier to remove the instrument cluster than it is to remove the odometer. If you need to replace the odometer in your Ford Focus, make sure you purchase a replacement instrument cluster from a Ford dealership or certified speedometer repair shop. Make sure to use care, when removing the dash trim and the cluster itself, as they break easily.
Insert your fingertips into the dash vents on the left side of the steering wheel. Once you have a firm grip, pull back and away from the dashboard until the trim panel clips pop out of their cavities. This will allow you to place your fingers under the trim panel and work your way across it, pulling gently but firmly at each position where a trim clip holds it to the dash until you have completely freed the trim surrounding the instrument cluster. Set the trim panel off to the side when done.
Use the socket set to remove the fasteners holding the instrument panel in place. There should be two at the top and two at the bottom. Set these fasteners in the cup holder after you have removed them so they do not get misplaced.
Pull the instrument cluster outward until you can access the wiring harness connected to the back.
Use a pocket screwdriver to disconnect the wiring harness connector then slide the instrument cluster out of the dashboard. If your Focus has a tilt wheel, it is best to tilt it fully down during this procedure.
Remove any packing material from the replacement instrument cluster and position it above the steering column. Connect the wiring harness to the new instrument cluster then slide it back into position.
Retrieve the fasteners from the cup holder and reinstall them.
Position the trim panel back in place and carefully pound all the trim clips back into their cavities, one at a time, using the side of your fist. If you removed fasteners from above the instrument cluster in Step 1, do not forget to replace them now.
