How to Replace a Subaru Engine Mount

The engine mounts on a Subaru absorb the vibration from the engine and keep the engine in place while it is running. The mounts are essentially a rubber bushing encased in a steel housing. The bushing is what usually fails due to dry rot. When the bushings on the engine mounts fail, the entire mount will need to be replaced. While you will need to replace all engine mounts, you should only work on one mount at a time.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • New motor mounts
  • Support your Subaru's engine from below using a floor jack. Subarus do not use a transverse engine mounting orientation. All Subarus use an all wheel drive system, so there is not much room to support the engine; therefore you will need to make sure that the jack is centered perfectly on the underside of the engine.

  • Open the hood and remove the bolt that runs through the center of the engine mount to the engine mount bracket. This bolt secures the engine to the frame of the vehicle.

  • Remove the engine mount vehicle chassis bolts. Most Subaru vehicles use two bolts on the engine mount to secure it to the frame of the vehicle.

  • Pull the engine mount off the frame and install the new mount. Installation is the reverse of removal.
