How to Disconnect the Cruise Control on a Ford

On many Ford vehicles, a known cruise control switch problem will cause the module to corrode and eventually catch fire. Many owners have opted to simply turn off or disconnect the cruise control module on their Ford vehicle until they can have the switch replaced or permanently fixed. Ford has issued a recall on this problem. However, until you have the issue resolved, you must disconnect the cruise control.

  • Remove the fuse panel cover underneath the steering wheel by pulling down on it. Some model Fords have a lock handle or knob you must turn counterclockwise before pulling down on the fuse cover.

  • Pull the fuse for the cruise control using the fuse pullers in the fuse panel.

  • Open the hood. Look to the driver's side of the engine bay. There is a black plug connected to an orange plug right in front of the brake master cylinder.

  • Pull the black plug off the orange plug. Your cruise control is now disconnected. Put the fuse back in or you can leave it out. Some Ford models may need the cruise control fuse left in due to it affecting the speedometer readout.
