When reupholstering a bench seat, it is a good idea to remove the old seat cover before ordering any parts. The bench should be checked for broken springs, cables or stringers. For the seat to be structurally sound, these should be replaced if they are broken. The foam should also be inspected. If it is out of shape or ripped, it is easy to replace. The seat frame parts, the foam and the seat cover can be purchased from the same place and are quite inexpensive.
Remove the bench seat from the truck by removing the four bolts securing the seat to the floor with a 3/8-inch drive socket. Lay the seat on the floor with the back of the seat down. Remove the hog rings in the bottom seat from underneath the bench by twisting them with pliers to open and remove them. Take the seat cover off the bench.
Sit the seat upright and fold the backrest down. The hog rings for the backrest are at the bottom of the backrest. Remove these and pull the backrest off.
Inspect the seat frame for broken springs or wires. If there are only a few wire stringers broken, they can be replaced or repaired. If many are broken, a new seat spring assembly should be installed not only to make the seat more comfortable, but to keep its shape. Inspect the seat cushions and replace these if they are deformed or ripped.
Install the seat spring assembly using the pliers to bend the stringers into the seat frame.
Install the backrest cover, pulling it down from the top. Stretch it as tight as possible and make sure it is lined up square on the sides. Attach the hog rings to the seat cover at the bottom between the backrest and the seat cushion. Use the hog ring pliers to tighten the hog rings, which will bring the seat cover together at the bottom.
Install the bottom seat cushion in the back first. Attach the hog rings to the rear of the seat frame and the seat cover. Tighten these hog rings with the pliers. Stretch the seat cover over the seat and down the front. Pull it tight so it fits with no wrinkles. Install the hog rings in the seat cover and the front seat frame and tighten with the hog ring pliers, which stretches the seat cover tight. Replace the seat in the truck.
