How to Install a Camshaft Sensor for a Mitsubishi Mirage 97

The camshaft sensor, officially known as the camshaft position sensor (CPS), is a vital part of a car's engine. The sensor sends signals to the vehicle's ECU (computer) to notify it of the position of each cylinder during operation. The camshaft sensor in your 1997 Mitsubishi Mirage is built into the distributor. Since you do not have to remove the distributor, replacement is quite easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement camshaft sensor
  • Pop the hood unhook the negative (-) battery cable before beginning. Always unhook the negative battery cable when working with engine electrical components.

  • Locate the camshaft sensor in your Mirage. Since the Mirage camshaft sensor is attached to the distributor, you will need to find the distributor. Look on the passenger's side of the engine bay on the outside of the intake manifold.

  • Detach the electrical throttle body connection. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws mounting the sensor to the distributor.

  • Pull the sensor from the distributor and discard it.

  • Mount the new camshaft sensor and tighten the screws. Replace the electrical throttle body connection.
