The power steering pump pulley on a Jeep Cherokee has a tapered center hole, which is pressed on the power steering pump input shaft. The tool for extracting the pulley is too large to fit on the end of the pulley while the power steering pump is installed in the vehicle. The power steering pump should be drained and removed from the vehicle and placed on a bench to remove the pulley.
Remove the serpentine belt, using a wrench to loosen the bolts in the tensioner to the bottom right of the power steering pump. Use a wrench and remove the high and low side power steering hoses from the rear of the pump.
Remove the three bolts securing the power steering pump to the engine, using a socket. Access the bolts through the holes in the power steering pump pulley. Remove the pump and lay it on a bench.
Attach the power steering pulley remover on the pulley by threading the center stud on the remover into the power steering input shaft. Turn the large outer nut on the remover clockwise until it contacts the pulley. Install the two side clamps with the bottom end around the pulley slot and the top end in the remover slot. Install the keeper ring around both clamps to hold them in place on the remover and pulley. Turn the large nut counter-clockwise with the large adjustable wrench while holding the center stud with a wrench to keep it from turning with the large outer nut.
