How to Remove a Honda Crankshaft Bolt

The crankshaft bolt on a Honda holds the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft on the driver's side of the engine. The pulley mutes the resonance from the engine, preventing the crankshaft from separating while the engine is running. While the resonance is successfully muted by the crankshaft pulley, the crankshaft pulley bolt tends to get stuck on the crankshaft pulley. To remove it from any Honda engine, you'll need a special tool available from Honda and an impact wrench capable of generating 600 or more ft.-lbs of torque.

Things You'll Need

  • Air compressor with impact wrench
  • Crankshaft pulley bolt removal tool
  • Lubricating/penetrating oil
  • Place the crankshaft pulley bolt removal tool over the end of the crankshaft bolt. The tool will hold the pulley in place while you apply torque to the bolt with an impact wrench.

  • Start the air compressor by plugging it in and turning it on. Set the pressure of the compressor on the highest setting.

  • Attach the air hose on the air compressor to the air inlet and locking mechanism using the quick-connect lock on the end of the air compressor hose. Set the impact wrench to turn counterclockwise.

  • Spray the crankshaft bolt with penetrating oil. Make sure you soak the bolt head in oil so that it is easier for the wrench to remove.

  • Secure the socket end of the wrench to the pulley bolt and pull the trigger on the impact wrench. You might need to reapply penetrating oil several times during this process to loosen the bolt up. Eventually, the bolt will come off.
