How to Replace a Chevy Astro Power Window Motor

The Chevy Astro uses a window motor to operate a single cable-type regulator to raise and lower the radio. The motor can be replaced independently. It is not a difficult process; however, it requires a little familiarity with tools and automotive experience. Depending on the year model and where it was produced, it may have either rivets or screws holding the motor to the door and regulator.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Common screwdriver
  • Number 30 Torx driver
  • Remove the two screws from the arm rest, using a number 30 Torx driver -- they are concealed by a plastic cover, which can be pried off with a common screwdriver. Remove the single screw from the inside door handle cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the handle cover off.

  • Insert the common screwdriver between the door panel and the door and pry out the trim fasteners located on both sides and on the bottom of the door panel. Lift the door panel up and swing the bottom out slightly to release the top of the door panel from the top of the door sill.

  • Pull the panel away from the door, enough to reach behind the panel and unplug the window switch electrical connector. Peel the moisture shield back to expose the window motor. Unplug the window motor.

  • Drill out the center of the rivets, using a 9/64-drill bit. Use a 5/16-drill bit to remove the crown. Wiggle the motor gears loose from the regulator and remove the motor, then discard it.

  • Install the new motor by pressing it into the gear in the regulator. If this proves difficult, wiggle it up and down until the gears mesh. Hold the motor against the door and lift or lower the motor to align it with the holes in the door. Install the screws and tighten them firmly.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the window motor. Push the moisture shield back into place. Install the door panel, align the trim fasteners with their respective holes and press it in place. Install the Torx bolts in the arm rest and press the single screw into the door handle cover.
