How to Repair a Vinyl Dash

A cracked or vinyl dash is hard to ignore, being that it is plain sight every time you get into your car. The idea of completely replacing the dash is not an attractive one for most car owners, so repairing the dash is usually the next thing to be considered. Vinyl dash repair is something that anyone with the time and patience can accomplish themselves.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid metal filler, PermaTex or similar
  • 3M Bondo or similar two-part auto-body filler
  • Sandpaper
  • Fiberglass cloth
  • Flat plastic vinyl paint, in the color to match the dash
  • All supplies available at an auto parts store
  • Remove the dash from the vehicle. Fix the small cracks in the dash first by filling them in with a liquid metal filler product, such as the one made by PermaTex. Apply one coat, allow it to dry, sand it, and then repeat the process with a second coat.

  • Use a patch of fiberglass cloth cut to size and some resin to make a patch for the bigger cracks. Allow the resin to cure, then sand the surface until it is smooth.

  • Fill any gaps in the area with the fiberglass patch using Bondo. Again, sand the surface once it dries completely. Apply a second coat in the same way.

  • Clean all the areas repaired thoroughly and allow them to dry.

  • Finish the repair by applying two coats of flat plastic vinyl paint, using a paint that is the same color as your dash.
