How to Change the Window Motor on a Dodge Stratus

Changing the window motor on a Dodge Stratus is not complicated, although the directions should be followed because this is a spring-assisted unit. The coil spring that helps the window motor lift the window is very strong, and without the proper procedure, injury can result. The window regulator is the spring-loaded scissors type with a motor that drives a large gear for the movement of the window.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of ¼-inch sockets
  • ¼-inch ratchet
  • Set of sockets
  • Common screwdriver
  • Large vise grips
  • Set of wrenches
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Remove the door panel by removing the two screws in the armrest with the Phillips screwdriver. Remove the Phillips screw in front of the inside door handle. Place the common screwdriver in between the door panel and door frame. Use it to pry out the trim fasteners holding the door panel on. Lift the bottom of the door panel out and lift up at the same time to unhook it from the top ledge.

  • Remove the electrical connector from the master window switch on the door panel. Clamp the long control rod attached to the gear with the vise grips. Make sure the vise grips are secure because the spring pressure will attempt to snap them closed like a scissors when the motor is removed. The vise grips prevent the rod from lifting upward.

  • Remove the electrical connector from the motor. Remove the three bolts using a ¼-inch socket and ratchet.

  • Install the new motor by inserting the gear on the motor into the gear in the regulator. It may be necessary to rotate the motor slightly back and forth to get the gears in the motor to align with the gears on the regulator. Screw on and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet used to remove them.

  • Remove the vise grips. Plug in the electrical connector to the power window motor. Install the door panel in reverse order of removal.
