How to Disable a Car Horn

If your car horn is inoperable or sticks, some states allow you to install an aftermarket horn that can be activated by a switch or button. Disabling a car horn can be performed in a variety of ways, but be sure to refer to the owner's manual of the vehicle before attempting to do so. Knowing how a horn in your car works will help you deactivate it.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuse puller or needle-nose pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Electrical tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Hand wrench set
  • Refer to the owner's manual for the location of the fuse panel. You can remove the fuse for the horn if your car has an exclusive fuse for the horn. Some fuses in the fuse box system may power electrical components other than just the horn, so be sure before removing the horn fuse that this is all the fuse operates.

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal from your car using a wrench before attempting the remaining options if you were unable to remove the fuse.

  • Locate the horn or horns (some vehicles have more than one) in the engine compartment. Most horns are located inside the front grille area and resemble a large snail shell. Some vehicles may require removing components from the engine compartment to locate and access the car horn(s).

  • Remove the live wire attached to the back of the horn. Some wires have blade-type plugs that can be simply unplugged from the horn assembly. Some may be hardwired into the horn itself. Unplug the blade-type attachment and cover the blade-type plug with electrical tape so the live circuit does not contact other metal components and create a short in the system. If the wire is hardwired, cut the wire to the horn with wire cutters and wrap the end of the wire in electrical tape.

  • Remove the steering wheel cover as a last resort. Refer to the owner's manual on instructions to deactivate the air bag before attempting to remove the steering wheel cover. Once the cover is removed, locate the horn button assembly and disconnect the wiring. Remember to reactivate the air bag once you're done.

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal to the car.
