How to Change a Turn Signal Switch in a Chevy Blazer

The internal mechanism of the turn signal switch on your Chevy Blazer may break and fail to turn on the signals. Since it is an important part of the road safety system on your Blazer model, it is important to install a new signal switch as soon as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Nose pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pry tool
  • Ratchet, ratchet extension and six-point socket
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Utility knife
  • Two cable ties

Unplug the Air Bag System

  • Set the steering wheel straight with the front wheels pointing ahead.

  • Turn the ignition switch to "Lock."

  • Detach the black, negative battery cable, using a wrench.

  • Pull the airbag fuse from the fuse block located on the driver's side kick panel. Use nose pliers if necessary.

  • Remove the knee bolster or panel from underneath the steering column, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Unplug the two-way yellow connector at the base of the steering column and the connector behind the glove box if your Blazer model is equipped with a passenger-side airbag.

Remove the Steering Wheel

  • Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position. Then turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to the left or right from its horizontal position so that you have access to the mounting screws located behind the wheel. Unscrew the two mounting screws and turn the wheel 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Unscrew the other two mounting screws.

  • Turn the steering wheel to its straight position, pull the wheel cover and pull off the electrical connector attached to the back of the front cover. Label this electrical connector if necessary for easy re-installation.

  • Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees again in either direction, if your Blazer model is equipped with a steering wheel airbag. Otherwise, go to step 6.

  • Insert a pry tool through the small hole on the back of the steering wheel and push the leaf spring to release the airbag mounting pin. Then turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in the opposite direction and release the other pin on that side of the wheel.

  • Tilt the top of the airbag module toward you to gain access to the module wiring and disengage the wiring from the module and wheel. Label the wire for easy re-installation

  • Pull the wheel-to-steering shaft retainer clip using a pair of nose pliers.

  • Unfasten the steering wheel center-shaft nut using a ratchet, ratchet extension and six-point socket.

  • Match-mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the center steering shaft so that you can re-install it in the same exact position.

  • Pull the steering wheel using a steering wheel puller (see Resources).

Remove the Turn Signal Switch

  • Shift the turn signal switch to its center or "Off" position. Turn the ignition key off and remove the key.

  • Remove the two mounting screws from the lower steering-column cover using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the lower cover.

  • Cut the turn signal switch wiring-harness straps using a utility knife.

  • Follow the signal-switch wiring harness from the switch and unplug the three harness connectors.

  • Unfasten the two signal-switch mounting screws. One of the screws is located on top of the switch assembly; the other one is next to the switch lever and facing you.

  • Pull the switch straight out of the steering column assembly.

Install the New Turn Signal Switch

  • Place the new turn signal switch on the steering column assembly and fasten the two signal-switch mounting screws.

  • Plug the three signal-switch harness connectors to the steering column electrical harness.

  • Attach the switch harness to the steering column electrical harness using cable ties.

  • Set the upper steering-column cover in place and tighten the two mounting screws.

Install the Steering Wheel

  • Seat the steering wheel on the steering column shaft following the match-mark and start the mounting nut by hand. Tighten the nut using the ratchet, ratchet extension and six-point socket.

  • Install the steering-wheel-to-steering-shaft retainer clip by hand. If your Blazer model does not have a steering wheel airbag system, go to step 5.

  • Place the airbag module on the steering wheel and engage the electrical wire to the steering wheel and module.

  • Align the airbag module back pins to the leaf springs on the steering wheel. Push the module to engage the pins on the leaf springs.

  • Place the steering wheel cover and connect the wheel connector to the back of the steering wheel cover.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the "On" position. Then turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to the left or right from its straight position and fasten two of the wheel cover mounting screws from the back of the wheel using the Phillips screwdriver. Then turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in the opposite direction and install the other two mounting screws.

Plug the AirBag System

  • Plug the two-way yellow connector at the base of the steering column and the connector behind the glove box if your Blazer model is equipped with a passenger side airbag.

  • Install the knee bolster or panel underneath the steering column using the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Install the airbag fuse on the fuse block located on the driver's side kick panel.

  • Attach the black, negative battery cable using a wrench.
