How to Change the Thermostat in a Geo Metro

The third and final generation of the Geo Metro was available from 1995 through 1997. Developed originally by Suzuki in 1983, the model offered in the U.S. as the Chevy Sprint, Pontiac Firefly, the Suzuki Swift, the Geo Metro as well as more than a half dozen other nameplates worldwide. A number of the third generation Metros are still on the road and a great find for the used-vehicle buyer. This is a beginner level do-it-yourself project for the removal and installation of the thermostat in these models.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Replacement thermostat, new or rebuilt
  • New gasket for thermostat
  • Make sure the engine is completely cool. Drain the cooling system until the level of coolant is below the thermostat.

  • Remove the air cleaner. Take the electrical connector from the engine coolant temperature switch (when it is mounted to the thermostat housing).

  • Disconnect the inlet hose. Loosen and remove the housing bolts and then remove the thermostat housing. Discard the gasket.

  • Clean any gasket material and debris from the mounting surfaces. Set the new thermostat into the housing spring side down.

  • Set the thermostat housing in place with a new gasket. Put the bolts in place and tighten them to 15 ft lbs. Torque the nuts to 84 inch pounds.

  • Reconnect the upper hose to the thermostat housing and secure the hose clamp. Connect the electrical harness to the housing sensor.

  • Refill the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of coolant. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for any leaking fluids. Make the necessary adjustments to the parts installed.
