How to Install a New Steering Rack in a Chrysler Sebring

Installing a steering rack in older models of the Chrysler Sebring is slightly different from the newest production line. If you do need to replace your rack assembly on models for years 2001 to 2006, follow these steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wrench and screwdriver kit
  • Diagnose your steering problems thoroughly. Several different problems can cause identical symptoms, so you may replace your steering rack and end up fixing nothing. You should also check your tires, front-end alignment, power steering and even brakes.

  • Disconnect the negative battery and place the insulator on the stud to prevent accidental grounding. Raise the front end and remove the shaft coupler pin bolt retaining pun, the pun bolt and the front wheels. Loosen the tie rod end retaining nuts and separate the tie rod end and steering knuckle.

  • Scratch the front suspension crossmember on all four sides as well as the body to note the alignment. You cannot readjust these. Remove the stabilizer, then lower the control arm strut shackle and bolts connecting the engine support bracket to the crossmember and transaxle mounting bracket.

  • Lift and brace the crossmember and remove the bolts, connecting it to the chassis. Lower the lifting brace to reach the steering rack and disconnect the power steering lines (this will drain the fluid), pressure switch electrical connector, solenoid control connector, two steering rack isolator and two steering rack saddle bracket bolts. Now you can remove the steering rack.

  • Install the new steering rack and connect the isolator and saddle bracket. Reconnect the power steering pressure and return lines. Reattach the crossmember, beginning with the rear bolts. Tap the crossmember with a soft-faced hammer until the scratches align.

  • Reconnect the remaining components in the order you took them apart. Remove the lifting brace and replace the front wheels.

  • Refill the power steering fluid and bleed the air from the system. Make sure to check for leaks. Reattach the battery cable.
