How to Install a New Steering Rack in a Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang defined the pony car concept and was Ford's most successful launch since the Model A. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang entered its most recent generation in 2005 with the model's first automatic transmission option. If you want to get under the hood to install a new rack and pinion steering gear, keep the following procedures in mind.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack and jack stands
  • O-ring seals
  • Torque wrench
  • Check your tires, alignment and power steering fluid system before replacing the steering rack. Steering symptoms are often indicative of other problems that you can repair cheaply.

  • Center the steering wheel, disconnect the battery cables and drain the power steering fluid. Support your front end then pull off your front wheels and uncouple the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Detach the intermediate shaft coupling in the steering column and unhook the pressure and return fluid lines. Discard the O-ring seals.

  • Remove the steering gear and replace it with the new one. Torque the retaining bolts to 85 foot pounds.

  • Connect the power steering lines with new O-ring seals. Torque to return line to 17 foot pounds and the pressure line to 80 inch pounds. Reattach the intermediate shaft coupling to the steering column and torque the pinch bolt to 18 foot pounds.

  • Reconnect the tie rod ends with a torque of 59 foot pounds and mount the front wheels. Reconnect the battery cables and refill the power steering fluid. Check for a consistent fluid level and make sure there is no air in the system.

  • Make sure you properly align the front end. Double check for leaks in the power steering lines.
