How to Replace the Multi-Function Combination Switch in a Geo Tracker

The Geo Tracker was heavily marketed through the 1990s and then discontinued in 1998. Chevy continued the design a the Suzuki Viatra. The following steps offer details about the installation of the 1996-1998 Tracker's multi-function combination switch that controls the turns signals and hazard flashers.

  • Take the negative battery cable from the terminal. Pull the steering wheel from the vehicle. Remove the knee bolster panel and hole cover. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover screws and then remove the covers.

  • Disconnect the lead wires from the combination switch. Loosen and remove the screws that hold the combination switch assembly in place. Lift the combination switch from the steering column.

  • Position the new combination switch on the steering column. Install the assembly screws.

  • Connect the lead wires at the connector to the combination switch. Replace the upper and lower steering column covers.

  • Put the steering wheel in place. Torque the shaft nut to 19-28 foot/pounds. Install the knee bolster and the hole cover.

  • Set the horn button back in place. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Check to assure that the switch is operating properly. Enable the air bag system.
