How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Nissan Altima

The ignition coils transfer power from the battery to the spark plugs. In the process, the Altima ignition coils boost the voltage to provide the amount of power needed to create combustion. Altima Nissan models with 1.8L, 2.5L and 3.5L engines utilize a distributorless ignition system with ignition coils.

  • Protect yourself from accidents by using safety precautions. You need to disconnect the ground cable from the battery; look for the cable that connects to the negative terminal. Also set your emergency brake.

  • Identify the type of engine you have in your Nissan Altima. 1.8L and 2.5L engines need less steps to complete the job. The 3.5L engine requires more steps than other types of engines.

  • Remove the engine cover. Take care not to damage it.

  • Drain the engine coolant on the 3.5L engine. On this model, you also need to remove the windshield wiper arms and motor and the front cowl panel. Remove any other part blocking the ignition coil on other models.

  • Disconnect the spark plug wires or electronic connectors that attach to the ignition coil. Pay attention to the connection point. You need to reassemble in the same positions, or the engine won't fire correctly.

  • Pull out the ignition coil. You may need to gently twist the Altima ignition coil to release it.

  • Put the new ignition coil in and reassemble the parts.
