In a Kia Spectra, the ignition coils mount directly to the Number 2 and Number 4 spark plugs. This type of system is known as a distributorless ignition system, also called a DIS. Any do-it-yourself fan can replace a damaged ignition coil.
Isolate the negative battery cable connection. To do this, remove the cable from the battery terminal.
Remove the high-tension leads that attach to the ignition coil.
Release the electrical connectors. You may need to unclip these or squeeze the boot to disconnect them.
Use a wrench or a socket set to remove the mounting bolts that connect the ignition coil to the engine. The mounting system varies slightly between Kia Spectra cars with a 2.0L engine, so expect slight variation in the location of the bolts.
Remove the damaged Spectra ignition coil. To insert the new ignition coil, position it over the correct spark plug and push down.
Tighten the mounting bolts with a torque wrench. On 1.5L and 1.6L engines, set the torque wrench to 11.5 to 16.6 foot pounds (15.6 to 22.6 Nm). Use 14 to 19 foot pounds (19 to 25 Nm) for the 1.8L engine.
Attach the parts you removed and reconnect the negative battery cable. Make sure you put the connector back in the proper position, or you may damage your new Spectra ignition coil.
