How to Replace the Fan in a Chevy Silverado

Your Chevy Silverado may have a mechanical (belt-driven) engine cooling fan or an electric engine cooling fan. These steps apply to replacing an engine fan in a Chevy Silverado 1500 with a gasoline engine. A novice should be able to complete these steps in about 30 minutes using only a wrench.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable on your Chevy Silverado.

  • Unplug the fan harness wiring and electrical connectors.

  • Loosen and remove the fan mounting bracket bolts. Lift the engine cooling fan out of the engine compartment and set it aside.

  • Place the new fan assembly in the engine compartment and bolt it into place. A torque wrench may be helpful as these bolts should be tightened to 53 foot pounds (72 Nm) of torque.

  • Make sure there are no loose parts or tools in the engine compartments, then reconnect the negative battery cable in your Chevy Silverado.
