How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Lincoln Navigator

There are a few different types of ignition systems a manufacturer can choose to start a vehicle. On the Lincoln Navigator, expect to find a distributorless ignition system (DIS). With this system, an ignition coil module converts the low voltage from the battery into a higher voltage to spark the spark plugs. Each module typically contains three ignition coils.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or socket set
  • Navigator ignition coil
  • Torque wrench, optional
  • Take precautions to avoid an accident. This includes disconnecting the ground cable from the battery and engaging the emergency brake. For added safety, isolate the ground cable to prevent contact.

  • Locate the ignition coil module. Typically, you can find it near the intake manifold. The module has an ignition coil cover to protect it.

  • Remove the Navigator ignition coil cover. You may need to use a small wrench or a socket set to undo the bolts that secure the cover.

  • Follow the electrical connector to the ignition coil. You need to remove the electrical connector where it connects to the ignition coil.

  • Twist the ignition coil to loosen the seal. Pull upward and remove the ignition coil from the module.

  • Install the new Navigator ignition coil. You may need to replace more than one ignition coil when you work with an ignition coil module.

  • Assemble the parts that you disassembled to remove the Navigator ignition coil. If you have a Torque wrench, use it to tighten the bolts on the ignition coil cover to 53 inch pounds (12 Nm).
