How to Replace the Fan in a Chevy Impala

The Chevy Impala was manufactured from 1958 to 1985, then brought back into production in 2000. The type of fan in the Impala depends on the type of engine and the model year. The following uses the year 2000 Chevrolet Impala with the 3.4 Liter engine as the example. Replacing the fan in other Chevrolet Impalas could require different steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement fan
  • Safety goggles
  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Box wrench
  • Adjustable crescent wrench
  • Torque wrench

Remove the Fan Assembly

  • Disconnect the battery's negative cable. Partially drain the cooling system.

  • Loosen the bolts on the engine struts, before taking off the upper tie bar's engine strut brace bolts. Rotate the struts and the braces towards the rear.

  • Disconnect the air inlet on the throttle body and adjust the air cleaner assembly to allow access to the air cleaner.

  • Disconnect the radiator inlet hose and the cooling fan shroud retainers before removing the bolts from the shroud.

  • Detach the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainers. Take the shroud clip off the top of the radiator.

  • Move the cooling fan shroud out of the way and unhook the electrical connector.

  • Take off the fan shroud and the electric fan assembly as a unit.

Reinstall the Fan Assembly

  • Reconnect the cooling fan electrical connector before installing the fan and shroud assembly. Put the shroud clip back onto the radiator. Push firmly to fully engage the shroud clip.

  • Connect the transaxle cooler lines to the retainers and torque the shroud bolts to the proper specifications.

  • Reinstall the shroud retainers.

  • Connect the radiator hose and reinstall the air cleaner assembly along with the air inlet ducts if necessary.

  • Turn the struts and braces forward in order to reinstall the engine strut brace bolts.

  • Refill the cooling system. Be sure to use the proper coolant mixture for the season.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable before conducting a safety check of the engine.
