How to Replace a Power Mirror in a Ford Explorer

Ford's sports utility vehicle, the Explorer, is a reliable vehicle that's proven to take a beating, but even an SUV needs replacement parts from time to time. To replace any year Explorer mirror, remove the entire door panel to work on the power mirror.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench

Remove Old Mirror

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting the project.

  • Remove the door panel by taking all screws out and pulling the entire door trim off.

  • Disconnect the harness electrical connection to the Ford Explorer's power mirror located on the door panel.

  • Peel back the padded upholstery over the mirror access panel to locate the screws. Take the screws or nuts out, and lift the mirror out of the frame.

  • Remove and throw the old mirror gasket away.

Install New Mirror

  • Place the new Explorer mirror into the proper spot. Make sure the new gaskets are in the proper place.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the host slot.

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable to check for proper operation.

  • Re-attach the door trim panel if the mirror is working properly.
