The Pontiac Bonneville fuel pump is electric so you should check its fuses and relays before inspecting the fuel pump. If your vehicle still has difficulty getting fuel and your tank has fuel, you may need to clean or replace the fuel pump. The Pontiac Bonneville comes in a variety of styles and trim levels and this can affect your choice of fuel pump.
Select the new fuel pump for your Pontiac Bonneville. You will not only need to know the make and model, but also the engine size. Models made from 1958 to 1964 have a 389 cubic inch (ci), 400ci or 421ci engines. Models built from 1965 to 1970 also have the option of a 428ci or 455ci engine. Models made from 1971 to 1976 are limited to 400ci or 455ci engines.
Look at later generations of the Pontiac Bonneville. Models made from 1977 to 1981 have 231ci, 265ci, 301ci, 350ci or 400ci engines. Options for 1982 to 1986 include a 231ci, 305ci, 2.8L, 4.3L or 350ci diesel engine, and 1987 to 1999 models have a 3.8L engine.
Examine the last generation of the Pontiac Bonneville. These models were made from 2000 to 2005 and were available with a 3.8 L or 4.6 L engine.
Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and drain the fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the jack and spare tire so that you can remove the lining in the trunk. This will allow you to open the fuel sender access panel.
Remove the quick connect fittings and electrical connector from the fuel sender. Remove the retaining ring for the fuel sender and take note of the position of the fuel sender before removing it. Discard the O-ring.
Note the position of the strainer before you remove it. Unplug the electrical connections and hoses from the fuel pump. Take out the fuel pump.
Install the new fuel pump using the old grommets and insulators, but replace the O-ring and strainer. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
