The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller on the Honda Accord prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may need to replace the ABS, although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.
Determine which ABS controller your Honda Accord will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Accord. The Accord first had ABS as standard on the Accord Wagon in 1991.
Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Unfasten the ABS controller mounting bolts with a socket wrench and detach the connectors for the pump motors. Remove the brake lines with a flare nut wrench to avoid stripping the flare nuts. Take the ABS controller off of the bracket assembly.
Install the new ABS controller into the bracket assembly. Connect the brake lines with a flare nut wrench and tighten the fittings to 11 feet lbs. with a torque wrench. Attach the connectors for the pump motors and fasten the ABS controller mounting bolts with a socket wrench.
Bleed all the air out of the brake system beginning with the front driver's side brake caliper and proceeding clockwise. Connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.
Start the engine and ensure the ABS light does not come on. Check and clear any diagnostic codes as necessary.
