Losing lubrication in an engine will destroy it. The oil pump makes sure this doesn't happen by cycling oil through the engine and keeping it lubricated. In most cases, the oil pump lasts the lifetime of a car, but if there is an accident or if an engine needs overhauling, the oil pump in the Ford Mustang sometimes needs to be replaced.
Drive your Ford Mustang up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels so they don't roll. In addition, set the emergency break firmly into position so the car doesn't roll.
Remove your Ford Mustang oil filter and the oil pump body and gear. Take note of placement so you can reassemble after inserting your new oil pump.
Clean the surrounding cables with water and old rags to avoid corrosion from salt and other road maintenance substances as well as dirt.
Install your new oil pump. Remember to use a new O-ring seal. Tighten the large bolts to 18 ft-lb. The small bolts should be tightened to 89 in-lb.
Re-install the oil filter. Make sure your engine oil level is correct in your Ford Mustang. Start the vehicle and check for leaks where you were working.
