Geo Tracker SUVs were manufactured from 1989 to 1997 when the Chevrolet Corporation purchased Geo. Tracker models have gasoline engines, which require spark plugs to ignite the gasoline to start the car. Keeping an engine in tip-top condition requires regular maintenance including replacing old or damaged spark plugs.
Pop the hood and locate the spark plug wires. Depending on the engine's size, the spark plugs are on the front or side of the engine. Four-cylinder engine spark plugs are across the front of the engine. Six-cylinder engines have three spark plugs on the right side of the engine and three spark plugs on the left side of the engine.
Remove the spark plug wire boot or tip of the spark plug wire from the spark plug one wire at a time.
Slide the 3/8 socket over the end of the spark plug. Loosen the plug by turning the socket one or two times in a counter-clockwise motion. For six-cylinder engines, you need an extender to reach the spark plug with the socket wrench.
Clean the inside of the plug wire with the wire brush. Gently scrape the inside of the wire.
Squirt two to three drops of anti-seize lubricant onto the threads of the new spark plug. For Geo Tracker models manufactured from 1989 to 1995, order part number NG1233. For Geo Tracker SUVs manufactured after 1996, use part number NG6962.
Insert the spark plug into the slot on the engine. Turn the plug clockwise to tighten it into place. Use the socket wrench to tighten the plug 1/4 of a turn more.
Replace the spark plug wire. Push the wire tightly onto the plug without twisting.
Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the remaining old or damaged spark plugs.
