The 4.3-liter engine was available as an option on both trim levels of the 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup. The Vortec 4300, which uses a cast iron block and cylinder heads, is basically a V-6 version of Chevy's 5.7-liter, small block V-8. The cooling system in your S10 holds just short of 12 gallons of coolant -- a 50-50 solution of Dex-Cool and water. When troubleshooting a cooling problem, make sure the cooling system is full and the thermostat works.
Park the truck where you'll have ample light to work. Open the hood and allow the engine to cool.
Remove the radiator upper shroud retainer bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Lift the upper shroud out of the way to gain clearance to remove the fan.
Install a fan clutch wrench on the radiator fan pulley. Install the radiator clutch crow's foot on a ratchet, and fit it onto the fan clutch nut. Hold the pulley in place, using the wrench, and rotate the fan clutch nut counterclockwise to remove it from the pulley. Carefully lift the fan and clutch assembly from between the radiator and the engine.
Lay the assembly on a bench and remove the fan-to-clutch retaining bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Remove the fan from the clutch.
Position the new fan on the fan clutch. Install and torque the fan-to-clutch bolts to 24 foot-pounds, using a foot-pound torque wrench and socket.
Position the fan and clutch assembly over the pulley and thread the fan clutch onto the pulley stud. Hold the pulley in place and torque the fan clutch nut to 40 foot-pounds, using a foot-pound torque wrench and the clutch crow's foot.
Lay the radiator upper shroud in place. Install the upper shroud bolts and tighten them securely.
