Torque for the Head Bolts on a 1978 Volkswagen Van

The 1978 Volkswagen T2 Transporter was a second-generation VW, also known as the van or bus. It was powered by a flat-four-cylinder, air-cooled engine that produced 67 horsepower and 101 foot-pounds of torque. The engine design lent itself to easy maintenance and repair, and is popular for use in airboats and experimental aircraft. The relatively low compression ratio of 7.3-to-1 did not stress the internal components as higher compression ratios can do, which gives the engine good reliability and longevity.

Torque Sequence

  • Torque the head bolts in a specific pattern to prevent damage to the head, and ensure proper cylinder sealing. They are numbered in the following order, starting at the upper-left corner of the head, and moving clockwise; 8-2-4-6-5-3-1-7. These numbers represent the order you should tighten the bolts. Torque the bolts to 44 foot-pounds, in three equal steps, using a foot-pound torque wrench and socket.
